Punta Arenas in Magellan Straight

 So our continued luck with the weather extended into Punta Arenas.  Our waiter, Lucas, told us that he had been with the Viking Jupiter since December and this was only the 2nd time that the ship was able to dock in Punta Arena.  The winds and weather can be fierce here and often this port is bypassed because it is too dangerous to enter into the docking process.  Punta Arenas (Sandy Point) was in large part settled by immigrants from Croatia among other immigrants.

Absolutely beautiful day (windy at times but not so that it would keep ships out of the harbor)

Main square is the Plaza de Armas  with a monument of Hernando Magellan looking towards the bay

This central park had many beautiful trees  including this purple leafed plum and many old cypresses

Sara Braun, a wealthy local landowner and philanthropist.  However, she is associated with the genocide of the indigenous people, the Selk'nam. 

Bob was particularly impressed with the wiring in the city.  This is by no means a unique picture.  This wiring extravaganza was seen everywhere.
